Last month, The Push was engaged by Mackay Regional Council in Queensland to deliver a series of training workshops for young people to develop skills and confidence in staging youth-led events in their local community.

In 2022, Mackay Regional Council undertook consultation with young people in the area which included 1,000 conversations with local young people to understand what major issues they were facing. One of the bigger themes coming from that was a lack of entertainment specifically for young people.

Held at the Jubilee Community Centre, the training workshops led to big ideas from participants, focussing on themes around having fun, giving young people the opportunity to perform music in their community, and providing dedicated opportunities for local queer young people.

"In terms of engaging young people in the area, it's really important to bring them together, and allow them to feel like they have a community and can find new friends."

The Push’s Manager of Education and Training, Aarti Desai facilitated one of the workshops, and spoke to the impact of working with young people in Mackay on WIN News. Watch the clip here

One of The Push’s Workshop Facilitators Suzi Yaghmoor also facilitated a workshop on branding and promotion as a part of the three-week program.

We congratulate Mackay Regional Council for taking the initiative to empower their young people to not only explore options for youth-led events, but also be directly involved in the implementation of them. We’re looking forward to seeing what events they bring to life in the future.
